Running for charity

Registration for the Gerrards Cross Fun Run has opened today, February 17, so anyone wishing to run for Home-Start Slough can sign up for the event happening on May 11.

You don’t have to raise sponsorship to take part, just join up and pay the entrance fee of £11 per person aged 8+ or £6 for the children’s race to help raise money for charity.

Home-Start Slough is just one of two charities chosen to take part in this 5K race, which can be run, walked, hopped or skipped. What ever gets you to the finish line!

Home-Start helps parents, with at least one child under five, who are suffering from mental health issues, physical or mental disability, financial deprivation, bereavement, family breakdown, single parenting, multiple births, abuse, neglect and/or isolation.

Last year, our 70-strong team of specially trained home-visiting volunteers provided non-judgmental, life-changing support to nearly 100 vulnerable families in the area, with many more needing our help.

The fun run will start with the entertainment stalls opening around 11am and the 5km Fun Run starts at noon from the Memorial Centre. Later in the day there will be a series of short races for children aged between four and nine years old.

You can either decide to enter yourself and get sponsorship for the race or get your friends and family together as well to make up a team.

Once you have signed up and are raring to go, you will be given a t-shirt, number and timer chip.

There will also be medals given out and prizes for the best fancy dress, fastest team etc…

You could even dress up your dogs!

Entertainment on the day will be on East Common, brimming with activities, stalls, games and entertainment of all sorts.

  • Large bouncy slide
  • Large bouncy castle
  • Inflatable assault course
  • Fire engines
  • Film banners, posters and popcorn
  • Lots of children’s games, competitions and activities
  • Raffle
  • Beat the goalie.

There will also be refreshments and a licensed bar.

In times of great difficulty and stress, our volunteers have been a vital lifeline for parents by visiting them in their own homes and giving them the confidence and skills needed to cope with their daily lives. This enables their children to grow up in a happy and stable environment.

We are the biggest family volunteer organisation in the area and we have helped more than 3,000 children and their parents since 1996.

It costs in the region of £180,000 a year to keep our scheme going and we receive no government funding.

If families crumble, communities disintegrate and children suffer. That’s why our trained volunteers work with parents to help them become stronger and their children happier.

If we can reach the parent, we can reach the child.
